SEVEN THINGS TO DO AFTER A DISASTER
-
Preserve human life by evacuating endangered areas.
-
Save personal belongings that are irreplaceable, if time allows.
-
Contact your insurance agent or company.
-
If only partial damage occurs, prevent further damage, as soon as possible, by doing minor emergency repairs. Save all receipts for reimbursement by the insurance company.
-
Begin to compile inventories of destroyed items. If possible, assembly receipts or proof of purchase. If you have completed an inventory prior to the event, you will speed up claims settlement.
-
If your home is unsafe to occupy or is a total loss, find alternate housing and keep receipts for related expenses. Notify your insurance agent of your temporary address in order to expedite communications.
-
If you have lost your policy, request that your agent provide a replacement copy.
